Gothic walking past cemeteries
Interesting pattern: the Gothic style returned to life approximately every 100 years for over three centuries. By the beginning of the XXI century we have already gathered the authentic monuments of architecture of the “Gothic style”, formerly known as Russian pseudo-Gothic style, so you can confidently say: Russia is also a country of Gothic ruins. The greater part of the ruins and monuments it represents.
First of all it should be noted that we used to have “Gothic” referred to all ages, so and St. Basil’s Cathedral Moscow enlightened for the times of Catherine II – also Gothic. In a narrow understanding of the term “Gothic style” is called architecture that combines elements of Western European medieval, richly flavored old Russian décor with Oriental motifs, existed since the 70-ies of the XVIII century to the beginning of the XIX century. Russian craftsmen had no habits just copy foreign models; rather, they produced a bizarre symbiosis of local and foreign traditions. And with the Russian pseudo-Gothic European cathedrals, overwhelming its cold grandeur and size, was replaced in our land openwork, ornate buildings of medium size.
The first example of Gothic architecture in the Moscow region is the entrance of the Palace. With him is associated and the most burning secret Russian Gothic. There are rumors saying that Catherine II, for which the Palace was built, rejected almost finished project because of the abundance of Masonic symbols in the hold. That’s what horror! Indeed, the horror, agree architectural historians. In the sense that folk legend with the reality has nothing to do.
So, in 1775, Empress buys the suburban town of Black Mud to build a new summer residence in the “Gothic taste”. Constructing the Palace ensemble court architect Vasily Bazhenov. Being a man, watching the Palace game, he builds two identical palaces: one for the Empress, and another for her son, a juvenile at the time of Paul I. The reason is simple – Paul was nearly 18 years he was of age, and at court on this occasion has formed a significant “populovskaya” group influence, the purpose of which was offset from the throne of Catherine and approval of the Emperor her son. However, by the time of its completion in 1785 overbearing mother managed to push Paul from the throne, pinning hopes on introduced her grandson, future Emperor Alexander I. And the Palace complex was built without taking into account the new situation at the top. Seeing two mirror overlap of the Palace, Catherine reprimanded builders and, without examining the entire complex, left. Several days later, both of the Palace was demolished. Masonic symbols, as experts say, live on the bridges, entrance arches and rotundas today. Looking closer, you notice, and the star of Solomon, and the crossed crosses, and diamonds with swords – complete set. Bazhenov was a Mason, was not there, ruined his creation banal politics, not of the secret order.
